(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 15 - "Today's hikes imposed by dramatic geopolitical tensions are too violent and sudden, they must certainly be mitigated but, in the long run, the prices of carbon-based energy sources will have to gradually increase to guide everyone's behavior towards the goal of climate transition ".

This was stated by the head of the Economic Structure service of the Bank of Italy, Fabrizio Balassone, in a hearing on the bill converting the so-called bill decree to the Environment and Productive Activities committees of the Chamber.

"Looking ahead, it is good that we always think that we can face the inevitable price increases of fossil fuels by restoring the income of the most affected families or by facilitating the energy transition of companies rather than by attenuating the signal provided by the necessary change in relative prices", continues Balassone.

Balassone acknowledges that "in this phase of emergency, interventions to mitigate the increase in costs are indispensable. However, they cannot be extended indefinitely".

"On the one hand they would not solve the underlying problem of energy dependence from abroad, on the other hand they would absorb a very large amount of public resources, subtracting it from alternative uses or causing further increases in public debt"

"They will have to be made more selective, aimed at vulnerable families and at the companies most affected by the increase in costs; above all they will have to be accompanied by the acceleration and strengthening of the investments already foreseen for the energy transition, adapting the regulatory framework", is the indication of the Bank of Italy.
