Freising's medical spokesman warns: Omicron also causes many severe domestic illnesses.
The best way to protect against this is vaccination.

-The next wave of omicrons is racing upwards - at the same time, almost all corona protection measures are to be abolished shortly.
How does that fit together?
What can we expect in the next few weeks?
And how can you still protect yourself if the masks are falling even in the supermarket?
We talked about this with Georg Miedl, family doctor and chairman of the medical district association.
He emphasizes that Omikron is not to be trifled with either.
Mr. Miedl, more than 200,000 new infections every day. At the same time, even the basic corona protection will soon fall. Does that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up as a doctor?
BA.2 is just taking command
Politicians made decisions here at a time when the fifth wave was just going down.
That was also understandable: the individual rights of each individual can only be restricted as long as an extraordinary situation requires it.
And then politicians should also send clear signals, if possible not in the short term.
But now the infection process is catching up with us again.
The even more contagious omicron subtype BA.2 is taking over and we don't know how that will play out.
In any case, the curve is going up at the moment, and vertically.
Last year, around this time, there was also an increase again – but this was followed by a strong, sustained decline in the incidence of infection. Can we hope for the same this year?
The BA.2 wave will also be phased out at some point.
I hope there will be a breather then.
But I don't think that was the last wave.
I don't believe it anymore.
How do the hundreds of new infections that we have in the district every day affect your everyday practice?
Vaccination less, but much more advice
On the one hand, vaccination activity in practice has been greatly reduced.
We used to vaccinate whole days, now there are only two vaccination blocks per week, but they only last an hour or two.
At the same time, however, the rush to the infection consultation has roughly tripled.

Why is that?
On the one hand, omicron causes milder courses, which is reflected in the relaxed situation in the intensive care unit.
On the other hand, the extremely contagious virus variant ensures such a high total number of infections that even a small proportion of severe courses ultimately lead to many very ill people.
Which do not necessarily end up in the hospital and are therefore not counted as severe courses.
There are already many Covid patients in the isolation ward of the clinic, but not in the intensive care unit.
But there are also many severe domestic courses that last more than a week, so to speak, below hospitalization.
These patients suffer from severe headaches, high fever, exhaustion and shortness of breath.
And often there are still significant residual symptoms for weeks.
There is a clear difference between those who have been boosted and people with no or only basic vaccination protection: those who have been boosted are usually better off and are fit again more quickly.
Do you also have Long Covid patients?
Yes, and it often hits adults in particular who were previously perfectly healthy, and where you would never have thought that it would hit them so hard.
Supermarket: use shopping trolleys as spacers
Against this background, the mask is now falling even in the supermarket. A capital mistake?
There are already many cubic meters of air in the supermarket.
There is no infection like at events.
You just have to make sure that you don't get too close - for example with the shopping trolley as a spacer.
When in doubt, it is better to put on the mask once too much than too little.
It offers excellent protection – as well as keeping your distance.
And I'll emphasize it again: Vaccination offers a high level of protection against a serious illness.

Does a fourth vaccination make sense?
With the Omikron variant, the vaccination protection decreases more quickly.
The Robert Koch Institute has just pointed this out again.
Therefore, the Booster-Booster is very useful for people over 70 or with previous illnesses.
Do you already have inquiries from interested parties?
Occasionally yes.
But the demand is significantly lower than in autumn, when everyone wanted to be boosted.
People are just tired after two years of pandemic.
They just want a break now.
Unfortunately, the virus is not behaving as we would like.
