The sky is not blue or gray, but reddish-yellow in many places in Germany.

This is due to a very specific weather phenomenon.

And soon the rain of blood will set in.

Munich - The sky over southern Germany was bathed in an almost eerie light on Tuesday.

In many places, the clouds are not glowing grey, but reddish-yellow.

This weather phenomenon is caused by fine grains of dust from the Sahara being blown into Europe from North Africa.

The dust particles had already reached Spain and France on Monday, and it is now Germany's turn on Tuesday.

Weather in Germany: Sahara dust - from North Africa to Europe

The fact that desert sand reaches us in Germany is a fairly common phenomenon and occurs mainly in spring and summer.

The reason for this is a particularly warm weather situation in the Sahara in North Africa.

If there is a storm there, it drives the fine grains of sand up into the air and the particles are transported to Europe by the wind.

The warm desert air is currently causing mild temperatures - in some cases even values around 20 degrees could be reached.

Values between twelve and 16 degrees are actually the norm.

March this year has been extremely sunny so far.

It could be the driest March in over 140 years.

Sahara dust: Social media users share pictures

Users are currently sharing many pictures of the yellowish-red sky on social networks.

Some joke that a retro filter was used here:

Sahara Dust: There will be "Blood Rain".

If it rains, there will be the so-called blood rain.

The tiny sand particles are associated with the water vapor in the clouds.

If these are washed out, the precipitate has a reddish-brown color.

In Munich, this phenomenon is expected in the afternoon, because according to the weather forecast it will rain more there.

Snow can also turn red-brownish due to the Sahara dust.

Here one speaks of blood snow.

Mixed weather in Berlin and Brandenburg

The term blood rain has existed since the Middle Ages.

Back then, according to

galileo.tv

, people believed it would actually rain blood.

This was considered a bad omen, a sign of war and plague.

Nowadays, especially car owners have a problem with the blood rain.

Wiping the fine grains of sand dry can damage the car paint.

The dirt should therefore always be removed with water.

The following applies: Rinse off first, then grab a cloth.
