The United Nations World Food Program has warned of an exacerbation of famine in Yemen due to the Ukrainian crisis, which has caused a global rise in food prices and a decline in cash assistance.
According to a statement by the World Food Program, "the number of Yemenis in need of food aid this year rose to 1.2 million, bringing the total to 17.4 million," warning that the number would rise to 19 million if the required aid was not provided.
He added that "five million Yemenis are facing the threat of starvation and the Ukrainian crisis has caused a rise in food prices, which led to a shortage of 887 million dollars in funding," noting that "the organization was forced to stop food aid that was being provided to eight million Yemenis due to its shortage."
Yesterday, a UN report revealed a high level of acute malnutrition among children under the age of five, as 2.2 million children across Yemen suffer from acute malnutrition, including about half a million children who face acute malnutrition, a life-threatening condition.
The United Nations announced last November that until the end of last year, the war in Yemen had killed 377,000 people, directly and indirectly.
