Become independent when it comes to energy supply: Thomas Lix (45) from Gmund has been thinking about it intensively, and not just since the war against Ukraine fueled this topic.

With the request to set up an open-space photovoltaic system on his meadows near Zahlersberg, he did not arouse enthusiasm in the municipal council, but it did initiate a fundamental debate.

Gmund - The farm in the hamlet of Zahlersberg, which Lix inherited from his father, has not been a farm since 1992.

He has leased the meadows all around, cows graze on them, corn is grown.

Lix is a sought-after master carpenter, has his workshop here and also runs a gin distillery in the courtyard.

He has been working on the idea of building an open-space photovoltaic system with a total of 81,000 square meters on one of his properties between the courtyard and the B 472 for some time.

Thomas Lix now has a company that is responsible for the technology.

He himself would expand his professional field to include that of an electricity trader.

"We have to rethink," says Lix and describes how he envisions the project: Robust cattle could graze under the 2.20 meter high, elevated PV system all year round,

Bees might enjoy wildflowers.

Back to nature and still towards the future.

"We have to rethink," says Lix.

Solar park on the meadow: farmer rails against it

On Tuesday evening he heard what the local council thinks about its “Solarpark Dürnbach”.

"If we want to change something, that could be a piece of the puzzle," said Mayor Alfons Besel (FWG) ahead of the intense debate.

The head of the building authority, Christine Wild, initially provided a lot of information – on legal aspects and the requirements for feed-in tariffs.

Basically, a land use plan is necessary, with the preparation of a development plan, the change in the land use plan and an exemption from the connection requirement, as stipulated in the state development plan (LEP).

A nature conservation assessment is also necessary.

Farmer and CSU councilor Johann Huber made an emotional plea.

"The landscape is our capital, we can't sacrifice that," said Huber.

It is the best agricultural land that must be used for food production.

"Solar belongs on the roof and not on the field." He warned against further imitation and destruction of the landscape at Tegernsee.

"We have to put a stop to that," Huber demanded.

Solar park on the meadow: fear for imitators

Martina Ettstaller (CSU) was afraid of further desires: "Such a system, for example on the meadows near Kaltenbrunn, that would not be sustainable." Deputy Mayor Herbert Kozemko (CSU) even saw an "avalanche" rolling towards the region if the many "passive farmers" discover this business model.

Third Mayor Christine Zierer (FWG) was open-minded: Yes, it is an intervention in the landscape, but in this case it is not serious.

"We need to get away from just talking about the beautiful scenery but dropping the other issues." She was in favor of looking into the case.

While Korbinian Kohler (CSU) spoke of a difficult decision of conscience and was in favor of bringing consultants on board, Josef Stecher (FWG) even thanked him for the application: he understood the farmers' association,

but the concept for alternative power generation should be expanded.

For example, a municipal business model is conceivable for him.

It was important to Barbara von Miller (SPD) that such a power project would actually be of use to Gmund.

Michael Huber (Greens) pointed out that the focus should not be on electricity but on heat.

Even if no concrete decision was made: Besel assured that the municipality would do its homework and hold talks - with the authorities and regarding a location concept for Gmund.

"It's good that the topic was initiated."
