Wife of a Cuban detained for participating in protests will appeal the sentence 3:49
(CNN) --
Cuba's Supreme Court announced Wednesday that it has sentenced more than 100 protesters in Havana to between 4 and 30 years in prison for acts of violence committed during last year's demonstrations.
The statement states that they are "accused of committing and provoking serious disturbances and acts of vandalism, with the purpose of destabilizing public order, collective security and citizen tranquility."
The protests last July led the Cuban police to arrest hundreds of people who took to the streets to demonstrate against the government.
Cubans were protesting chronic shortages and a lack of basic freedoms, but soon after the protests began, police and special forces went door-to-door looking for participants.
For months, Cuban courts have tried hundreds of protesters in mass trials that have been criticized by international observers for their lack of transparency and due process.
