The police warn of scammers who use the relatives trick via messenger services.

There were several reports in the Neustadt ad Waldnaab district.

District of Neustadt ad Waldnaab – The Eschenbach id Oberpfalz police warns of the so-called “relative trick” via messenger services.

According to a statement, scammers use not only phone calls for their crimes, but also services like WhatsApp.

Alleged children or grandchildren with an unknown number report via a text message that they need immediate financial support.

In the past few days, several ads have also been placed in the district of Neustadt ad Waldnaab in which scammers have contacted their victims via messenger services.

In doing so, they often trick the recipients into believing that there is a traffic accident with consequences under civil or criminal law, which can only be avoided by paying immediately.

Neustadt ad Waldnaab: Fraudsters come up with inventive excuses

The fact that the relatives used a new phone number for the text message, which the victim had not previously known, is usually explained conclusively.

The previous phone was damaged in an accident, lost or otherwise inaccessible.

The fraudsters often get large sums of money through the scam.

In one case, a victim paid several thousand euros into an account.

The 55-year-old had received a message from his supposed "daughter" asking her "parents" to pay a hefty bill.

The police were not informed until another bill had to be paid.

In another case, a 72-year-old victim received a text message from an unknown number.

The person who wrote the message also claimed to be her daughter.

Here, too, was asked to settle a bill.

The victim then contacted his daughter directly and became aware of the fraud.
