Erlangen - It all started with a Whitsun market and bird shooting: In 1755 the annual Whitsun market was moved from the old town to the castle hill.

Today it is a festival that is known far beyond the city limits: the Erlangen Bergkirchweih.

It can now look back on more than 250 years of tradition, making it the oldest beer festival in the world - a full 55 years older than the Munich Oktoberfest.

The Erlangen Bergkirchweih, along with the Rock im Park festival in Nuremberg, is probably the most popular festival in the region.

Every year the Burgberg is the scene of the Erlangen Bergkirchweih.

The 16 underground cellars are particularly worth seeing.

In the past, they were used to keep the beer cool all year round with the help of natural ice in the cellar tunnels - today they make it easier to serve drinks during the festival: because the celebrations take place in the cellars and in the festival tents.

Erlangen Bergkirchweih 2022: Cozy beer garden flair

Year after year, more than 100 fairground companies come to Erlangen for twelve days.

Together with the beer cellars, they make up the special flair of the Bergkirchweih in the days before Pentecost, which attracts around one million visitors every year.

Cheerful get-togethers with music, beer, dancing and fun are guaranteed on the Burgberg.

On the Thursday before Pentecost, at 5 p.m. sharp, the mayor of Erlangen taps the first barrel in the Henniger cellar - the starting signal for the Bergkirchweih.

In a typical beer garden atmosphere - under old chestnut trees that are decorated with lanterns - visitors can enjoy beer and Franconian specialties.

The showmen's program offers a change from the beer garden coziness.

Erlangen Bergkirchweih 2022: Traditional end with a beer funeral

The festival is over after twelve days: on the last day of the festival, the Bergkirchweih traditionally ends with the beer funeral.

Landlords and helpers pull through the crowd with shovels and pickaxes.

Also present: one of the landlords as a priest and a last barrel of festival beer, which they bury.

Traditionally, the visitors say goodbye while waving white handkerchiefs to the sounds of "Lili Marleen".

Erlangen Bergkirchweih 2022: Planning has been going on for months

Like so many other festivals, Corona has thwarted the Erlangen Bergkirchweih in the last two years.

But this year there will be celebrations again: The third largest folk festival in Bavaria is planned for 2022 from June 2nd to 13th.

After a two-year break, the Erlangen Bergkirchweih will probably take place again this year.

Planning for the festival has been going on for months.

The application period for the showmen ended in mid-October.

100 were selected from almost 400 applicants.

Various scenarios are being played out as to how infection protection measures could be implemented as part of the Bergkirchweih.

Erlangen Bergkirchweih 2022: The mountains are calling!?

- Numerous corona restrictions are conceivable

But does all of this mean that this year, after a two-year break, it's actually back to "The Call of the Mountains!"?

It is not yet clear whether the fair can actually take place.

In order to be as well prepared as possible, a wide variety of options would be planned.

“Topics such as 2G or admission controls, which we are now quite familiar with from some areas of our daily life, are of course included in the scenarios.

At the same time, each scenario must be checked for its practicability and feasibility.

We are intensively investigating these sometimes far-reaching issues," says Guisbert Yassin-Inti Velasco, head of the "Markets and Church Consecrations" department in the property office, to

nordbayern.de

.

Whether the Bergkirchweih can take place this year cannot be said with certainty at the moment due to the still dynamic infection situation.

And not only Corona, but also Ukraine are now influencing the planning.

This is what Konrad Beugel, consultant for economics and finance as well as “Berg” consultant, said about the current plans.

Accordingly, the organizers wanted to orient themselves to other festivals that are about to start, such as the Würzberg Spring Folk Festival and the Nuremberg Spring Festival.

“We keep our fingers crossed for them.

If these take place, the chances of the Erlangen Bergkirchweih being held increase.

In any case, the preparations for the fair are still being worked on.
