In the Corona crisis, there were already hamster purchases.

Due to the war in Ukraine, some shelves are empty again.

The precise reasons for this are varied.

Hof - Whole shelves are empty in the Marktkauf branch in Hof.

As a result of the Russian military attack on Ukraine, supermarkets and drugstores are experiencing delivery bottlenecks.

The phenomenon of empty store shelves is known from the Corona crisis.

Back then, hamster purchases were the cause, today it is primarily the supply bottlenecks with food.

In the branch in Hof, however, there is another reason.

As a result of the Ukraine conflict: Short-term delivery bottlenecks in Bavarian supermarkets

The Marktkauf branches

which are also located in Nuremberg, among other places, are part of the Edeka Group.

Stefanie Schmitt is the press spokeswoman for Edeka Nordbayern-Sachsen-Thüringen.

When asked about hamster purchases by customers , she told

inFranken.de

that the situation in the markets was very different from region to region.

The bigger problem currently seems to be the supply chains: "Short-term supply bottlenecks" occur in all branches, according to Schmitt.

Sometimes hamster purchases also take place through aid organizations

In some cases, the shelves of the supermarkets are emptied even further due to bulk purchases by aid organizations.

"Dear customers, we would like to point out that the Ukraine crisis may lead to increased purchases by aid organizations," says a sign at the Marktkauf branch in Hof.

However, the phenomenon does not seem to be the main problem for supermarkets so far.

But currently there is no reason to worry in Bavaria

In general, there is currently no reason to worry about the food supply in Bavaria.

According to Schmitt from Edeka Nordbayern-Sachsen-Thüringen, an adequate supply of basic groceries and everyday goods can be ensured.

Only in individual cases are there short-term delivery bottlenecks for certain products, explains the Edeka spokeswoman.

"This applies in particular to cooking oils, some of which also come from the Ukraine." Depending on the situation on site, the branches call on consumers not to exacerbate the situation by buying hamsters.

"There is still no reason to build up additional stocks," emphasizes Schmitt.

It is currently difficult to assess how the situation will continue against the background of the unforeseeable end of the war in Ukraine.

To show solidarity with the Ukraine, an Edeka in the Nuremberg region has removed Russian vodka from its range.
