As the war in Ukraine continues and millions of people flee the country, questions arise about how to help the refugees.

(CNN) --

Thousands of miles away from the violence engulfing Ukraine and forcing millions from their homes, Americans are searching for answers.

Google says that searches on how to help Ukrainian refugees have increased in the United States, along with other questions about the crisis.

Some of the concerns come from people trying to find places to donate in their neighborhoods.

Others focus on events happening on the other side of the world.

Here are some of the questions the Google Trends team says have come up most frequently, and what we know so far about their answers.

How many refugees have escaped from Ukraine?

More than three million refugees have left Ukraine in less than three weeks, according to United Nations figures.

Nearly two million more have been displaced within the country.

Where do most refugees go?

So far, most of the Ukrainian refugees have gone to Poland.

More than 1.8 million Ukrainians are in the neighboring country, according to UN statistics.

There are also a large number of Ukrainians in Romania, Moldova, Hungary, Slovakia and Russia.

Will Ukrainian refugees go to the United States?

Not in the same volume that Europe registers.

Since October 2021, at least 690 Ukrainian refugees have been admitted to the United States, according to State Department data.

But more Ukrainian refugees may arrive in the United States soon, depending on what steps the Biden administration takes.

Multiple sources have told CNN that the administration is in talks about ways to help Ukrainian refugees reunite with family members already inside the United States by providing a special pathway for their admission.

This is something that the president of Poland has been pushing;

last week he asked Vice President Kamala Harris to speed up and simplify the procedures that allow Ukrainians with families in the United States to enter the country.

The process of resettling refugees in the US often takes years.

How can I help Ukrainian refugees?

Food and other supplies are increasingly scarce inside Ukraine, and civilians continue to flee the country in search of safety.

Organizations on the ground in Ukraine and neighboring countries are helping with shelter, food, water and other basic supplies.

Amid harrowing accounts of the tragedy in Ukraine, CNN viewers have contributed more than $5.9 million to humanitarian relief efforts, according to Public Good, the online giving platform CNN has partnered with.

Can I host a refugee family?

UK officials have announced a scheme called "Homes for Ukraine," under which UK residents can register their interest in hosting Ukrainian refugees.

But so far, the refugee resettlement system in the United States does not involve the sponsorship of individual host families.

There are nine resettlement agencies tasked with working with the government to help refugees resettle in the United States.

Once the US government approves a refugee for admission, the International Organization for Migration and resettlement agencies often coordinate their travel, and refugee resettlement agencies help them settle once they arrive.

Can I sponsor a Ukrainian refugee?

Currently, Americans cannot sponsor certain Ukrainian refugees to help them get to the United States.

But nonprofits working with refugees in the United States say there are plenty of volunteer and community sponsorship options to help refugees around the world.

Can I help house Ukrainian refugees in the United States?

If large numbers of Ukrainian refugees end up arriving in the United States, housing is going to be a key issue.

This year, refugee resettlement agencies and human rights advocates have already struggled to find affordable housing for many of the tens of thousands of Afghan evacuees brought to the United States in Operation Allies Welcome.

Late last year, the US government announced the creation of a new program called "Sponsor Circles" to help provide support to arriving Afghans.

Until now there is no initiative like this in the United States for the Ukrainians.

But US officials have said they plan to launch a new private sponsorship pilot program for refugees this year, a move welcomed by advocacy groups.

Can I adopt a Ukrainian orphan minor?

This is a question that the State Department says they have heard a lot about this question.

But the department notes that Ukraine is not approving any children for participation in overseas foster care programs that often serve as the first step in the adoption process, and that meeting the extensive legal requirements for international adoption is "exceptionally difficult." "In times of crisis.

The State Department also states that there are other important details to consider:

  • Determining whether children who appear to be orphans are actually eligible for adoption and immigration under US law in these circumstances can be "extremely difficult."

  • Children are sometimes temporarily separated from their parents or other family members during a conflict.

Their parents may be looking for them.

  • Children often pass into the care of other relatives after their parents have died.

  • During crises, some minors who are not orphans live in orphanages for their safety.
