The Ukrainian city of Mariupol is under heavy Russian shelling.

Recently, a theater housing hundreds of civilians was bombed.

Mariupol - The number of victims after the bombing of a theater in Mariupol is still unclear.

The Russian troops in the city are blocking the attempts to rescue those in need from the ruins of the theater.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced salvage work despite the state of war in the city.

Mariupol is one of the cities that have suffered the most from the Ukraine conflict.

War in Ukraine: Theater in Mariupol bombed – according to Selenskyj, “hundreds” are still under the rubble

According to Ukrainian sources, "Children" was clearly written on the ground next to the theater building in Russian.

According to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, "hundreds" of people are still trapped under the rubble.

More than 130 people could have been saved, said Zelenskyj on Friday.

The theater had served as a refuge for civilians.

"Hundreds of residents of Mariupol are still under the rubble," said Zelenskyy.

Furthermore, the Ukrainian President announced salvage work in the ruins of the theater building.

Ukrainian MP Sergiy Taruta said Russia's blockade of the city is hampering rescue efforts.

Some people would have made it out of the destroyed theater.

But the others "who survived the bombardment will die under the rubble of the theater or are already dead".

On Friday, the Human Rights Commissioner of the Ukrainian Parliament, Lyudmila Denisova, announced that there were around 1,000 people seeking protection in the theater.

Russia has denied responsibility for the theater bombing.

As with the attacks on a maternity hospital in Mariupol last week, Moscow blamed the nationalist Ukrainian Azov Brigade.
