If you want your clothes to last a long time, you should make sure that they are washed properly.
According to cleaning expert Ivy Odom, you're probably not doing it right.
She turned to the Southern Living ticketing audience to share the most common mistakes you (and we) probably make when you go to wash your clothes.
The first mistake to avoid is to put anything in the machine with an open zipper.
The cleaning expert argues that all zippers should be closed because the sharp edges can damage delicate fabrics.
Also all the hooks, like the ones on the back of the bras, need to be connected to each other before washing for exactly the same reason.
The only thing that is unusual about this laundry rule are the buttons on the pants, which should always be open.
This is because the hard movements in the machine can cause the buttons to come loose and break - leaving your jeans looking old and cheap.

She also explained that many people forget to add baking soda to their washing machine.
This secret ingredient is, she says, a "great addition to any laundry," because it can dispel any bad odor and also works as a stain remover.
Equally important - it will save you a lot of money on expensive branded cleaners.
The last mistake that should always be avoided is to wash your clothes at the wrong temperature.
According to the laundry expert, you should use cold water for bright and warm colors for whites.

Some viewers of the useful tips agreed with her: "Yes! I always close zippers", one reporter and another added: "I add baking soda to every wash, it's also great for the washing machine!".
Other viewers were not convinced.
