8,500 prescriptions for Merck, over 1,000 prescriptions for Pfizer

Liu Jiaxian said that the HA had introduced oral medicines from Merck & Co. and Pfizer earlier. Among them, 1,000 patients were prescribed MSD's oral medicines yesterday, which have been used on more than 8,500 patients; Pfizer's oral medicines have only started recently. It has been used by 400 to 500 patients in a single day yesterday, and more than 1,000 patients have been prescribed in a few days.

Medical staff will prescribe drugs according to clinical situation

As for lowering the age limit for prescribing oral medicines to 65 or above, Lau stressed that the HA has many experts, including experts in medicine, infectious diseases and microbiology, and has formulated guidelines for prescribing oral medicines, including clinical conditions, efficacy and side effects. Frontline caregivers will refer to the guidelines for prescribing medicines.

He said that doctors and nurses will also arrange treatment plans and prescribed drugs based on clinical conditions and other factors, so although there are guidelines, they will still be decided based on the patient's situation.

Experts are discussing changes to medication guidelines

Liu also said that experts are also discussing whether to revise the clinical guidelines, and pointed out that the guidelines for the use of each drug will need to be revised according to the scientific data after taking the drug and the types of patients encountered. Prescribing the most appropriate drug to the patient at the right time prevents the patient from becoming seriously ill or dying.

He said that the public can rest assured that when they see a doctor, they only need to inform the doctor about their condition, medical history and medication, and the doctor will make the most suitable treatment.

Merck: Oral drugs have been approved for conditional registration and will be supplied to private hospitals

Tang Weicheng, managing director of Merck Hong Kong and Macau, said in an interview that his new crown oral drug has been approved for conditional registration by the Department of Health, and he is preparing to submit additional documents, hoping to supply it to private hospitals and clinics as soon as possible, but did not disclose the price. It is also said that several large private hospitals have expressed interest in introducing oral drugs, and it is believed that they will be available soon.

Liu Jiaxian said that the HA has an established mechanism to borrow medicines for use in private hospitals, and oral medicine for the novel coronavirus is one of them. Whether the inventory is sufficient or not is currently under discussion on the incident, and it is believed that there will be a corresponding drug use mechanism in a short period of time.

Merck also pointed out that due to the different pharmacology of each drug, the effect of each drug is also different, and it is suitable for different types of patients. For long-term medication, Merck is more suitable.

The pharmaceutical company also expects to produce at least 20 million courses of treatment this year, and has sufficient communication with the Hong Kong government to be confident in meeting the demand.
