Opinion | Two Years to the Corona Plague: Time to Learn Lessons | Israel today

2022-03-20T21:03:03.831Z

We need rehabilitation, which requires a conscious change of exit from the state of emergency and an expansion of the perspective that characterized the management of the crisis • So, the story may turn out to be completely different

On the second anniversary of the corona plague, the need for a courageous investigation and real lessons learned arises.

The corona is not the last plague that humanity is expected to deal with, and a true understanding of what has happened in the last two years is of immense importance to the way it will be dealt with in the future.

The characteristics of the virus were known immediately after its onset (natural or laboratory accident): its properties, aerosolic mode of infection and not just droplet, low mortality rate and enormous variability in severity according to age - severe disease in the elderly and patients, mild in the rest of the population.

The implications are clear: maximum protection of the elderly and strengthening of the health system are the necessary actions.

The State of Israel has prepared for the plague, but in recent years preparations have been neglected, the emergency department in the Ministry of Health has degenerated, and awareness, which is the most important aspect of readiness, has dissipated.

The Ministry of Health was caught by surprise, and the response reflected fear among decision-makers.

The measures taken against an epidemic that represented the most lenient scenario for which we were prepared were taken from difficult horror scenarios: full closure, movement restrictions and closure of the education system.

A state of emergency has been declared, and to this day emergency regulations are violated that violate basic freedoms.

Restrictions on citizens have severe health costs: neglect of chronic diseases, anxiety, depression, addictions, eating disorders, domestic violence and more.

There is no need to say too much about the economic and educational prices that followed the plague, but were the steps taken really necessary and effective in reducing morbidity and mortality?

The body of scientific research does not support this.

The main action in the second corona year was a mass vaccination.

Vaccines against RNA viruses do not prevent infection well, and the expectation that the vaccine would eradicate the epidemic and lead to herd immunity was an illusion. Although the vaccine against corona has reduced mortality.

There is no medical consensus in the world as to the correct approach to the plague.

What is the impact of the lack of open professional discussion and even the silence of professionals?

What is the impact of actual coercion of medical care, patronage that has taken years to break free from, on patients' trust in caregivers and the system?

What are the sad consequences for the personal and national resilience of public information, an ongoing intimidation show that is completely unacceptable in the management of emergency events?

And why were the worn-out medical teams in the hospitals not intensified, and on the other hand billions of shekels were poured out on worthless means, such as thousands of respirators and mass tests of people without signs of illness?

Was it possible to prevent high mortality among the elderly?

Was there a justification for closing the schools and isolating the children in the face of the enormous damage done to them?

Why wear masks when they are not known to prevent aerosol infection?

Was the Ministry of Health caught in the wrong conception?

Has the health care system correctly defined the purpose of the struggle?

Health is defined as: "a state of physical, mental and social well-being, and not just the absence of illness."

Loneliness is a disease, unemployment is a disease.

These are no less deadly diseases than corona.

We need rehabilitation, which requires first of all a conscious change of exit from the state of emergency and an expansion of the narrow perspective that characterized the management of the crisis.

On sober observation, the true story of the corona plague may turn out to be completely different from the one marketed to us by governments and the media.

Clarifying and interrogating the brave are necessary to recover and be ready for future challenges, otherwise we are doomed to repeat disastrous mistakes.

Were we wrong?
