Damascus-SANA
Today begins at 5:33 p.m. Damascus time, the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere and the autumnal equinox in the southern hemisphere, where the length of night and day are equal on this day, according to the Syrian Astronomical Society.
Member of the association's board of directors, Nabil Al-Bish Bayn, told SANA reporter that since today, the two poles of the Earth exchange sunlight, so the sun rises on the North Pole after a night of 6 months and sets on the South Pole after a day of 6 months.
Al-Bish pointed out that the equinoxes and solstices are caused by the tilt of the Earth around its axis 23.5 degrees and its continuous movement in orbit around itself and around the sun.
In the equinox, the two hemispheres receive the sun’s rays equally, and here it is often said that the night and the day are equal in length, but the truth is that there is a slight difference “between 1 and 3 minutes” during the day, according to Nabil Al-Bish.
He added: In equinox also, the line separating the day and night becomes vertical and connects the north and south poles.
The equinox is the official announcement of the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of autumn in the southern hemisphere, in which the length of the night is equal to the length of the day.
