Old driving licenses must be exchanged.

The District Attorney's Office has its hands full.

Erding

– Almost at the last minute – thanks to Corona – the deadline was extended.

Instead of January of this year, the first period for the mandatory exchange of driving licenses will not expire until July.

So motorists born between 1953 and 1958 still have a few months before they need to replace their old rag with a plastic card.

But the exchange is already in full swing at the driver's license office in the district of Erding.

Four clerks are currently busy at the driver's license office in the Erding district office with applications for a driver's license exchange, informed authority spokeswoman Claudia Fiebrandt-Kirmeyer on request.

The conversion means a noticeably increased administrative burden.

"The rush is high," emphasizes the spokeswoman.

On the one hand, applications from people born in the district between 1953 and 1958, for whom the first deadline for the exchange is July 19, are currently being processed.

About 6500 district citizens belong to this group of people.

On the other hand, by January 2023, those born between 1959 and 1964 should also exchange their driving licences.

Their applications must also be processed.

By 2033, any driving license issued before 19 January 2013 will have to be exchanged for the new EU card-sized driving licence.

Each year of birth has its own time window in which the old rag must be replaced with the card (see box).

Anyone who is still out and about with the old paper form risks a fine of ten euros.

However, you don't commit a crime - it's different with truck and bus driver's licenses.

A driving license cannot be exchanged online.

If you want to get rid of your old rag, you have to appear in person at the driver's license office, just like when you apply for a passport or ID card.

Because of the pandemic, an appointment must be made in advance.

There were bottlenecks at many district offices due to Corona and the associated complicated processing processes.

The applications took a long time, and drivers sometimes had to wait a long time for their new documents.

The conference of interior ministers therefore decided in mid-January for a grace period.

In Erding, the new driver's license can usually be obtained after four to six weeks, says Fiebrandt-Kirmeyer.

However, only if the previous driving license was issued by the district office in Erding.

If, on the other hand, this was issued by another authority, "an index card script must be requested, and depending on the receipt of this copy, it may take longer," admits the spokeswoman for the authority.

In order not to create even more administrative work and possibly produce an application backlog, the district office asks you to stick to the gradual plan.

The exchange of other vintages is not rejected, but "the people concerned should exchange within their deadline if possible".

By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Erding newsletter.
