The Munich chief physician Wendtner warns of a sixth corona wave.

He rates Omikron's immune protection as low and, according to him, Deltakron could be dangerous.

Munich – The nationwide seven-day incidence reaches new highs almost every day.

On Saturday (March 19) it was 1735.0.

The federal government has nevertheless decided to relax the corona for Germany, which will take effect from Sunday.

There was a lot of criticism for this, especially with regard to the elimination of the mask requirement.

Bavaria and other federal states use the transitional rule and extended the measures until April 2nd.

Virologist Streeck therefore demands more personal responsibility from people.

In an interview with the

Augsburger Allgemeine

, the corona expert Clemens Wendtner, chief physician for infectiology in Munich, clearly spoke out in favor of a mask requirement and warned of a sixth wave.

He also gave an assessment of immune protection after an omicron infection and the new Deltakron variant.

Corona expert warns of insufficient Omicron immune protection - "False conclusion, to think..."

"Corona is not over yet, the cow is not off the ice yet," says Wendtner in an interview.

A new wave is developing.

The infection process will therefore not end abruptly in the next few weeks.

Wendtner therefore considers a mask requirement in the entire public area to be sensible.

He criticizes politics for the coming easing.

"Instead of this constant back and forth, I would like to see clear, binding guidelines from a medical point of view."

People would believe that the pandemic was no longer so bad, that according to Wendtner, protective measures had become more careless.

For him it is also a "fallacy to think that it would be good to pick up an infection once, so to speak, in order to then be particularly steeled against further infections".

In his view, this is wrong.

"We have clear indications that Omikron's immune protection after an infection is not particularly high right now." He also has patients in the Munich clinic in Schwabing who have been infected several times with Omikron.

You should therefore not rely on the protection.

Corona expert Wendtner recommends a throat swab at Omikron

As the infectiologist explains in an interview with the

Augsburger Allgemeine

, the viral load in omicrons is very high, especially in the throat area.

He therefore always recommends a throat swab for rapid antigen tests.

This is also better for self-tests at home.

However, only if it is possible with the test kit according to the manufacturer.

Rapid tests often show a false negative result even with symptoms.

Wendtner therefore warns: "A negative result must never be regarded as a free pass."

The Munich chief physician also gave an assessment of the new Deltakron variant.

It is assumed that people were infected with delta and omicron at the same time and then genetic material from both viruses was mixed.

This is how the hybrid variant came into being.

"In principle, one could assume that Deltakron combines two unpleasant properties of the virus, i.e. being highly contagious like omicron and inducing severe disease progression like Delta." But that's all still completely speculative.

However, Wendtner is certain that other variants will come and go over the course of the pandemic.
