On Monday (March 14) a luxury cruise ship from a German shipping company ran aground in the Dominican Republic with thousands of passengers on board.

Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic) - This is probably not how the passengers imagined their trip on vacation.

The luxury liner of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

named Norwegian Escape wanted to leave a port in the Dominican Republic on Monday.

During the attempt, the ship ran aground with 3223 guests and 1618 crew members on board.

It then hung for hours.

The ship comes from a German shipping company.

The ship ran aground on a channel bed near Puerto Plata, reports

Bloomberg

.

A spokesman announced this.

A tugboat was in action most of the afternoon and evening to free the ship, it said on social media.

Around midnight (local time), the cruise ship, which has a length of around 326 meters, should be able to continue its journey.

It is one of Norwegian Cruise Line's largest ships.

Cruise ship stuck on canal bed for hours

The cruise ship originally departed from Orlando, Florida.

According to passengers, the crew had tried unsuccessfully for hours into the night to get the ship free again.

However, the passengers probably did not have to worry about their safety on the cruise.

Fortunately, neither the guests nor the crew were harmed during the involuntary stopover.

The ship itself was not damaged either, a spokesman said.

Operations on board continued as planned.
