The Ukrainians who fled the war could be a blessing for the tight German labor market - provided the federal government sets the right course.

Munich/Berlin - Integration into the labor market and into society was a major issue during the refugee crisis of 2015 and 2016.

The conclusion, almost seven years later: it was missing in many corners and ends and a lot could have been done better.

But now everything should be different.

War in Ukraine: So far over 200,000 refugees have been registered in Germany

Due to the Ukraine war*, many refugees are currently coming to Germany.

Mainly women and children, as men between the ages of 18 and 60 are not allowed to leave the country.

As the

Tagesschau

reported on Saturday (March 19), 207,742 war refugees have been officially registered in Germany since the Russian troops invaded.

Many have already found temporary accommodation.

But now the question arises how to proceed for them.

Unlike in 2015, Ukrainians seeking protection in Germany can stay and work here for a year after registering*.

You don't have to go through a complicated asylum procedure to get a work permit.

Ukraine News: Refugees have above-average qualifications

Migration researcher Herbert Brücker from the Institute for Labor Market and Occupational Research (IAB) explained to

Der Spiegel

that one year was clearly too short and significantly reduced employment opportunities.

"The refugees who are already here and those who are still to come will be qualified above average," he also explains.

But not only the limited length of stay could become a problem.

For integration, they also need language courses and childcare options.

But these are already scarce.

Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) told the

Welt

television channel how important integration is now*: “Language acquisition must be possible.

It must be clear that qualifications acquired in Ukraine are also recognized here.”

In view of the shortage of skilled workers, the German economy could definitely use qualified immigrants.

Last October, the Federal Employment Agency reported a shortage of 1.2 million skilled workers.

In particular, social pedagogues, geriatric nurses and nurses are currently missing.

The immigration of qualified specialists is also repeatedly referred to in the pension discussion.

Even the coalition agreement of the Ampel parties states that pensions are to be strengthened through “employment-related and qualified immigration”.
