At the end of last week, the gondoliers of Venice had to use a lot of strength to move forward on the canals of the lagoon city.
The reason: low tide in Venice.
The small canals were almost dry.
The low water level was caused by insufficient rain in northern Italy.
The full moon on Friday also increased the tides in Venice.
This not only has an impact on tourist canal trips, it also makes it difficult to transport goods on the water.
Normally, the water level changes by about 50 centimeters at high and low tide.
As a rule, however, there is more than too much water here: there is even a name for the annual flood: the so-called "acqua alta" is caused by a combination of different factors, which are also aggravated by climate change.
Above all, the rise in sea level plays an important role.
Venice is world famous for its historic architecture.
And it suffers with every new flood.
That is why the "Moses" protection system was put into operation last year.
78 moveable gates are now supposed to protect the city from the floods.
