Saarbrücken – After the super election year 2021, there will be several elections in different federal states in the new year.
In Schleswig-Holstein, North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony, new state parliaments will be elected in 2022.
However, the state elections in Saarland, which are scheduled for March 27th, will give the starting signal for the new election year.
Around 700,000 voters from the smallest area in the Federal Republic can then cast their votes.
In the 2022 state elections, the incumbent Prime Minister Tobias Hans (CDU) will stand for election as his party’s top candidate for the first time.
In the last state election in Saarland, the CDU was still led in the election campaign by the then state leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, who brought in a strong 40.7 percent for the Christian Democrats.
In 2018, Kramp-Karrenbauer, who was chosen as her successor by then Chancellor Angela Merkel, was elected Secretary General of the CDU.
Tobias Hans, who at the time was the leader of the CDU parliamentary group in the Saarland state parliament, succeeded her.

The Saarland has been firmly in the hands of the CDU for a long time.
In the 1994 state elections, the SPD, with its top candidate and incumbent prime minister, Oscar Lafontaine, was the strongest force.
Then the CDU took over and, since the 1999 state elections, had been the prime minister in Saarland.
Peter Müller ruled for almost three legislative periods in Saarbrücken before he resigned due to his forthcoming election as a judge at the Federal Constitutional Court.
Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer took over between 2011 and 2018.
The later Federal Minister of Defense was able to bring in 40.7 percent of the votes with the CDU in the last state election in Saarland.
The SPD, which has been the coalition partner of the Christian Democrats since 2012, achieved 29.6 percent.
As a result, the grand coalition secured 41 of the 51 seats in the state parliament.
The left was third with 12.8 percent.
The AfD entered the state parliament for the first time with 6.2 percent.
Greens and FDP each failed at the five percent hurdle.

In the upcoming state elections, the SPD wants to become the strongest force in the state parliament and once again sends the Saar SPD party leader and deputy prime minister, Anke Rehlinger, into the running.
The 45-year-old is to replace the incumbent Prime Minister Tobias Hans after four years in office at the head of the Saarland.
The left is sending Barbara Spaniol, a member of the state parliament, into the race as the top candidate.
The General Secretary of the Saarland AfD, Kai Melling, will act as his party's leading candidate.
