The journalist, former presidential candidate and former director of the Violeta Barrios de Chamorro Foundation for Reconciliation and Democracy, Cristiana Chamorro Barrios, was sentenced this Monday to eight years in prison for the crimes of money laundering and appropriation and retention undue, as reported by the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights, Cenidh, through its Twitter account.
According to the Cenidh, Chamorro will continue under house arrest, while Walter Gómez and Marcos Fletes, administrator and accountant of the Violeta Barrios de Chamorro Foundation, respectively, the judicial authority imposed 13 years in prison for the same crimes, in addition to abusive management and ideological falsehood.
For the crimes of abusive management, appropriation and improper retention, the former liberal deputy and brother of Chamorro, Pedro Joaquín Chamorro, received a nine-year prison sentence.
For his part, Pedro Váquez, the journalist's driver, was sentenced to seven years.

In addition, according to the Cenidh, the judiciary charged almost all of them with a fine of US$1,600,000 and another of 56 million cordobas.
The only exception to this measure was Pedro Joaquín Chamorro.
Those now convicted had been found guilty on March 12 in a closed-door trial held at the Judicial Assistance Directorate of the National Police.
They have all pleaded not guilty and the defense attorneys argued that none of them were responsible for the crimes charged.
For this reason, they stated that they will file appeals with the judiciary.
