A fatal mountain accident occurred on the Sonnenberg in Unterammergau.

A man (41) lost his footing and fell in front of his companion.

Unterammergau

- On Monday, March 21st, there was a fatal mountain accident on the Sonnenberg.

The Munich II public prosecutor is investigating the course of the accident.

According to police, the accident happened around 10:45 a.m. on Monday.

The victim of the accident is said to be a 41-year-old man.

The on-site investigations are being conducted by an officer from the Alpine task force under the guidance of the public prosecutor.

Fatal accident on the Sonnenberg: Man falls 200 meters deep in rocky terrain

According to initial findings, the 41-year-old mountain hiker from Bruckmühl was walking the ridge with his companion from Pürschling.

Not far from the 1,622 meter high Sonnenberg, on a shady and crusted surface of snow, he suddenly started to slide.

The 41-year-old lost his footing and was unable to stop the slide.

As a result, he fell about 200 meters over steep, partly rocky terrain.

He finally came to rest in what was still a very steep ditch.

After the crash on the Sonnenberg: Rescuers can only determine death

The man's companion managed, despite her state of shock, to make an emergency call and climb down to the unconscious man in the ditch.

There she waited for the alarmed emergency services, the Unterammergau mountain rescue service, who arrived at the scene of the accident with the emergency doctor and the rescue helicopter Christoph Murnau.

On site, however, only the death of the hiker could be determined.

The companion was rescued by the emergency services and then continued to be cared for by the mountain rescue service's crisis intervention team.

Police mountain guides from the Alpine Task Force (AEG) and a police helicopter were also used to rescue the deceased and clarify the course of the accident.

It is currently assumed that the accident was the only one involved.

Fatal accidents happen again and again in the mountains.

A hike can be dangerous, especially in wintry conditions.
