An aircraft bomb was found in Augsburg earlier this week.

An aircraft bomb from the Second World War was found during construction work in the Augsburg university district.

The defusing started on Tuesday evening.

Update from March 22, 8:52 p.m .:

As reported by the Swabian North police on Twitter, the bomb has now been defused.

"All residents can now go back to their apartments."

Construction workers in the university district on Tuesday came across the projectile from the Second World War, which originally weighed 225 kilograms, the city said.

Around 2,000 people had to leave their homes temporarily.

According to the city, residents within a radius of 300 meters were asked via loudspeaker to leave their houses.

Until the bomb was defused, they could gather in the university canteen, it said.

An air bomb from the Second World War was also rendered harmless in the south of Nuremberg on Tuesday morning.
