The final building permit for the tallest mega-skyscraper in the city of Hamburg has been granted.

But it is not only the speed that causes criticism of the Elbtower.

Hamburg – After the Elbphilharmonie, in the middle of the decade Hamburg will have the so-called Elbtower, the second new landmark that can be seen from afar: Because the mega-skyscraper will tower over all buildings in the Hanseatic city with 64 floors at a height of 244.80 meters, as well as 24hamburg.de reported.

With the Hamburg television tower, for whose restaurant location Tim Mälzer, among others, applied, only one building in Hamburg will be higher after the completion of the Elbtower.

At a height of 276.5 meters, the Heinrich Hertz Tower, as the Hamburg television tower is officially called, will be a good 30 meters higher than the Elbtower in Hamburg.

The Hamburg Senate has now issued the final building permit for the Elbtower Hamburg.

This is reported by several media, including the German Press Agency.

Elbtower Hamburg: Criticism of quick building permit - Senator is accused of going it alone

The Elbtower building senator Dorothee Stapelfeldt (65, SPD), who heads the building authority, approved it.

It has now been announced that the building permit for the Elbtower has been granted.

The Bild newspaper therefore speaks of the senator going it alone.

Criticism also comes from the opposition in the Hamburg Parliament: "Surprisingly, the building permit is now faster - so far there has always been talk of summer 2022," the Hamburger Abendblatt quoted the urban development policy spokeswoman for the left, Heike Sudmann.

The politician believes that the Hamburg Senate is doing everything it can to "build golden bridges" for investors.

According to Sudmann, the Elbtower is “completely superfluous”.

Signa Real Estate Group: The Elbtower Hamburg investor is no stranger to the Hanseatic city

The Elbtower's investor is the Signa Real Estate Group, whose portfolio already includes the Alsterarkaden in Hamburg and the luxury department store Alsterhaus on Hamburg's Jungfernstieg.

Signa Real Estate, in turn, is owned by billionaire René Benko from Austria, who also owns the department store chain Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof.

According to estimates, the construction costs for the Elbtower Hamburg are around 700 million euros.

Elbtower Hamburg on the outskirts of Hafencity: after completion, the third tallest building in Germany

The start of construction of the Elbtower is planned for the end of 2022, according to the dpa statement on Monday.

Completion of the mega-skyscraper, which will form the eastern end of HafenCity and will be built directly on the Elbe bridges, is scheduled for 2025.

With a height of 244.80 meters, the Elbtower will take third place among the tallest buildings in Germany after completion.

Only the Messeturm in Frankfurt am Main (256.5 meters) and the Commerzbank Tower (259.0 meters) higher, which is only a few meters higher and also located in the Main metropolis, will be in front of the Hamburg building.

However, the places will probably have shifted again quickly: With the Millennium Tower A, the construction of the highest skyscraper in the European Union at 288 meters is planned in Frankfurt by 2030.

The Elbtower Hamburg would then take fourth place in the national ranking.

Star architect Sir David Chipperfield designed the Elbtower Hamburg

Preparatory measures for the Elbtower are already taking place on the Elbe bridges.

These include, for example, the excavation and further preparation of the excavation pit for the mega-skyscraper, which is being built directly at the Hamburg S-Bahn station “Elbbrücken” and will therefore have a connection to the HVV public transport network from the start.

The Brit David Chipperfield is considered one of the most renowned architects in the world.

In Germany, Chipperfield is responsible, among other things, for the new building of the Museum Folkwang Essen, the Modern Literature Museum in Marbach and several buildings on Berlin's Museum Island.

Including the repair of the New National Gallery.

The star architect has also worked on the Elbe: the 76 meter high Empire Riverside Hotel on the former site of the Astra brewery in Hamburg-St.

Pauli is based on a design by Chipperfield.

"Ecological catastrophe": criticism of the Elbtower in the past for environmental reasons

But the planning of the magnificent building with an estimated gross floor area of more than 160,000 square meters in a prime location, on the Elbe bridges and within sight of the Elbphilharmonie, has also attracted critics from the very beginning.

For example, the former Professor Dieter Läpple (80), urban researcher who taught, among other things, at HafenCity University.

Läpple has already described the Elbtower as an "ecological catastrophe" in the past, since the mega-building would consume too much CO₂ due to the masses of concrete.

According to Läpple, lower office buildings are more effective in this respect.
