Many people are unsure, especially when it comes to quarantine or isolation after a corona infection.
No wonder.
Because until recently, infected people and their contact persons had to go into quarantine for 14 days.
However, while the predominant omicron variant is more contagious than delta, the illness is shorter and less severe.
The incubation period is also shorter with Omikron than with Delta.
This also applies to the new Omikron lower mold BA.2.
That is why the federal and state governments decided on new quarantine rules at the beginning of January, which the states should follow.

Lower Saxony: free testing after the corona infection – end quarantine quickly
In Lower Saxony, the quarantine rules of the Lower Saxony Ministry of Health have been in effect since March 19, or to put it more awkwardly: the Lower Saxony Corona Separation Ordinance applies.
With the new corona rules, there are a few special features to consider in order to be able to test yourself free after a corona infection.

Here you can find out exactly when you and, if applicable, your children can leave the house again.
Anyone who has corona symptoms and is a direct contact person can test themselves free after a while with a POC antigen test (symbol image).

Do I have to be in quarantine or isolation?
Anyone with a confirmed corona infection must go into isolation.
This is an official order.
People who are suspected of having a corona infection and who could spread the virus must be in quarantine.

People who have been infected with Covid-19 must isolate themselves at home for ten days if they have a positive PCR or rapid test – even if they are vaccinated.
And also when they are boosted.
Close contacts of a person who has been proven to be infected must also be in quarantine for ten days.
But there are exceptions:
Contact persons without symptoms who have already received a booster vaccination do not have to be quarantined
Contacts whose second vaccination or recovery was less than three months ago also do not have to go into quarantine.
But even if you, as the contact person, do not have to be in quarantine, they could be contagious.
So you should still reduce your contacts and wear a mask reliably.

What counts as the first day?
For all those infected, the isolation usually ends after 10 days.
This applies from the onset of symptoms.
The prerequisite for the end of isolation is that you have not had any symptoms for at least 48 hours at this point.
If you had no symptoms but a positive test, 10 days apply from the positive test result.
Are you a contact person?
The first day of quarantine is then the day after you last had contact with the person who has been proven to be infected with Covid-19.
Can I test myself early with a PCR or rapid test or shorten the quarantine?
Yes, you can reduce home isolation to seven days.
Provided they can present a negative result of a rapid antigen test.
This must be carried out and officially certified by a doctor or in a test center or pharmacy.
The tests are free for all those affected.
The following applies to close contacts: They too can take a public test from the 7th day onwards.
Can I get out of quarantine or isolation earlier without a PCR or rapid test?
No, that is not allowed.
Are there exceptions for certain professional groups when taking free tests after a corona infection?
Yes.
People who work in hospitals, nursing homes and integration assistance facilities can test free after seven days with a negative PCR test result.
This applies both if you are infected yourself or if you are a close contact.
What rules apply to children?
When can you test yourself out of quarantine if, for example, a classmate or other kindergarten child has tested positive for Corona?
Is the child in the school or day care center the direct contact person?
Then you can have the child free tested after five days.
Provided it is symptom free and not self-infected.
An official PCR test or a rapid test is permitted for free testing, which is free of charge for those affected.
