Hualien, Taiwan's 6.6-magnitude earthquake "national alert" rang wildly, and some residents in Hong Kong reported feeling the tremor

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Hualien County, Taiwan on March 23, and the maximum magnitude was 6 in Taitung County.

Hong Kong residents also reported to the Observatory that they felt the earthquake.

According to Taiwan's Central Meteorological Administration, the earthquake occurred at 1:41 a.m. with a depth of 30.6 kilometers. The epicenter was located near the coast of Hualien County, 62.6 kilometers south of the Hualien County Government.

Areas with an initial magnitude of 4 or higher include Taitung, Hualien, Central, Gaoping and Jianan.

The Hong Kong Observatory received reports from more than 10 members of the public that they felt slight vibrations that lasted for several seconds.

Preliminary analysis showed that the earthquake intensity in Hong Kong was III(3) on the revised Mercalli seismic scale, which is felt indoors.
