Moscow breaks off negotiations with Japan on the Kuril Islands

Forced to participate in sanctions against Russia to maintain American strategic support for China, Japan has seen Russia clearly tighten its diplomatic attitude.


In the diplomatic field, the conflict in Ukraine has just made a collateral victim: the Russian-Japanese negotiations unfinished for decades on the fate of the Southern Kuril Islands claimed by Japan.

The controversy concerns four islets (Khabomai, Iturup, Kunashir and Shikotan) - which the Japanese refer to as their "

northern territories

".

They were occupied in August 1945, during the last days of the Second World War, by the Red Army and this situation has since weighed on relations between the two countries which, for lack of a peace treaty, remain formally at war.

," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
