A Russian court today (Tuesday) sentenced imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny to nine years in prison on fraud charges.
Navalny, who is also found guilty of contempt of court, is already serving a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence in a prison camp east of Moscow.
Immediately after the sentencing, police arrested the lawyers of the most prominent critic in recent years of Russian President Vladimir Putin, after they said they would appeal the sentence.
Opponents of the Kremlin say it is another showdown against Navalny, who was arrested and jailed on his return from Germany early last year after recovering from a nerve gas poisoning.
