Russian troops used stun grenades and shots in the air to disperse pro-Ukrainian demonstrators on Peace Square in Kherson on Monday.
The people bravely opposed the occupiers.
They shouted, "Go home!"
A representative of the regional government said the demonstrators would gather again the following day.
Cherson is the first major Ukrainian city that Putin's troops took control of in early March.
Since then, the protests have continued here.
A diplomatic solution to the war is still not in sight.
In an interview, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that he wanted to involve his people in decisions about compromises with Russia.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine:
»Nothing is decided by the President alone.
It is a long process that will be decided by the parliament and the Ukrainian nation.
By that I mean the negotiations with Russia on all these issues.
I have not yet met with the Russian negotiators, but I have explained to our negotiating partners: if we want changes of historical significance, we must hold a referendum.
People must be able to express themselves on this or that form of compromise.
How a compromise can look like will be the subject of talks between Ukraine and Russia.«
The main issues could be security guarantees and the status of the Crimean Peninsula annexed by Russia and the separatist areas in the Donbass.
Zelenskyy emphasized that only in a direct meeting with Vladimir Putin could he understand what Russia would do to end the war.
Putin had previously rejected such a meeting.
His army continued to attack Ukrainian cities.
