Regensburg: "False police officers" cause millions in damage
In 2021, call center fraud in the Upper Palatinate caused damage in the seven-figure range.
A big problem are fraudsters who pretend to be police officers, said Zink when the campaign was presented.
They were primarily targeting older citizens.
By phone, they first announce an alleged crime.
They then try to persuade their victim to give them money or jewelry that needs to be taken "to safety".
The perpetrators often mention supposed officials such as judges or prosecutors in order to appear more credible.
How to protect yourself from call center fraud
Follow these police tips to protect yourself from bogus police officers:
Do not let yourself be rushed into anything on the phone, regardless of the reason the caller gives: whether it is an alleged investigation or even burglars who are said to be active in your area.
If you get a call you're not comfortable with, just hang up.
That's not impolite - if in doubt, you can dial 110.
Real police officers will never ask for cash, money, or anything of value to conduct their investigation.
Never give money or valuables to strangers and never call back the number given to you on the phone.
