An awareness workshop for workers in the care of persons with disabilities at the Youth Lighthouse in Damascus

Today, the Syrian Trust for Development, in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor and the Syrian National Commission for UNESCO, held an awareness workshop for workers in the field of caring for persons with disabilities from the private sector within the framework of the national training framework for disability equality, at the Youth Lighthouse at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Damascus.

Director of Social Services at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, Awatef Hassan, stated that the workshop focuses on understanding disability from the perspective of the social model, helping to identify difficulties in society and facilitating proactive measures to remove barriers and discriminatory practices towards persons with disabilities, noting that the national training for disability equality aims to: Participation and integration of people with disabilities into society and qualifying them to enter the labor market by granting them official certificates.

Director of the National Program at the Syrian Trust for Development Annie Koshian explained that the youth programs offered by the Trust generally focus on activities that help develop people's skills to be effective in society, especially working life, noting that about 10,000 people are trained within the lighthouse.

Secretary-General of the Syrian National Committee for UNESCO at the Ministry of Education, Dr. Nidal Hassan, explained that the workshop comes within the framework of the implementation of the “Syrian Treasures at Home” project, which is directed to young people and is provided to build the capacities of persons with disabilities in order to benefit from their abilities and give them opportunities with activities that are beneficial to society, as indicated by the Secretary-General The Central Council for Persons with Disabilities Khawla Hanna said that this workshop is part of the national plan for disability that will be implemented.

One of the participants in the workshop was Nisreen Kahala, who pointed out the importance of the workshop in focusing on changing the society’s view of people with disabilities, while Raja Al-Hajj believed that it was important to know how to better deal with people with disabilities to be able to produce and give and make the environment more accepting of them.

During the workshop, a number of certificates were distributed to a number of trainees who became certified trainers in the care of persons with disabilities.
