In the general debate in the Bundestag, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) once again emphasized the federal government's support for Ukraine and spoke about the effects of the Russian war of aggression.
"Ukraine can rely on our help," said the Chancellor.
However, he rejected a no-fly zone over Ukraine.
A direct confrontation with Russia must be avoided.
"NATO will not become a party to the war, we and our allies agree on that." Anything else would be irresponsible, said Scholz.
Scholz said that stopping Russian oil imports could not be implemented overnight.
If you take hasty steps, Germany could face a recession.
The sanctions should not hit the EU harder than the Russian leadership.
Incidentally, the sanctions against Russia would be tightened daily, but many effects only became apparent after weeks.
Meeting of the heads of state and government on Thursday
Scholz assured the war refugees from Ukraine comprehensive support.
»It is still completely unclear how many women, men and children from the Ukraine will seek refuge with us.
All we know is that there will be many,” said the Chancellor.
“The refugees are welcome here with us.” Germany will help, and the federal government is also prepared to take additional measures.
On Wednesday, the Bundestag will discuss the budget of the Chancellery in a three-hour general debate.
It is considered the highlight of the budget deliberations in Parliament, which began on Tuesday.
On Thursday and Friday, the heads of state and government of NATO, the G7 and the European Union will meet in Brussels for three consecutive summits.
After the general debate, the Bundestag also discusses the budgets of the Federal Foreign Office, the Defense Ministry and the Development Ministry.
Because of the federal elections in autumn, the budget for 2022 will be presented to parliament several months later than usual.
