United States: former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, first woman to hold this position, is dead

Former US Foreign Minister Madeleine Albright died at the age of 84 on Wednesday, her family announced in a statement.

A former member of the Democratic Party, Madeleine Albright was Secretary of State under the Bill Clinton administration between 1997 and 2001, after having been ambassador to the United Nations for several years.

The ex-diplomat died of cancer, specify his relatives, who salute "a tireless defender of democracy and human rights".
