Gross pension: If you think about money in old age, you would like to have 2000 euros or more per month from the German pension insurance.

But the job alone is almost not enough.

Berlin – Whether gross or net: As far as money is concerned, one inevitably looks at retirement in old age.

After a life full of work, the plan is finally to benefit from the principle of the German pension insurance and to be secure in retirement.

However, several factors mean that even 2,000 euros gross at the end of life remains a dream for many.

Pension: The German pension insurance actually pays that

Anyone who pays into their pension hasn't gotten what they hoped for for a long time.

Demographic change and the like are doing their part: in 2021 there were over 21 million pensioners in Germany, and the trend is rising.

According to the Statista Research Department, the average amount paid out was roughly 1,500 euros – gross rather than net.

Not even one percent of the pensions paid out by the German Pension Insurance broke the 2,000 euro mark.

In view of inflation and the fact that many of today's retirees earned most of their money before the currency reform, this sum is more than sobering.

Calculate pension: This is how you decide whether you can enjoy retirement in old age

Anyone who is now wondering how much work has to bring in gross in order to get the money for a nice old age in old age, remains wondering for the time being.

The calculation system of the German pension insurance is not easy to understand for the layperson and, in addition to general aspects, also takes your own career path into account.

The factor that the employee has the most control over is the pay points.

Earning points: The gross counts

Earning points are the most important numerator in the pension formula.

They serve as a multiplier for the other pension aspects, i.e. the more payment points, the more money there is later from the German pension insurance - before tax, of course.

In order to determine how many earnings points one earns, one's own monthly gross earnings must be set in relation to the average earnings of all insured persons.

If the ratio is 1:1, you get one point.

As if that weren't vague enough, the calculation is performed annually and takes into account hypothetical earning potential under certain circumstances.

Focus Online

determined that exactly 60 payment points are required for the targeted EUR 2,000 gross pension.

2000 euros gross pension: These are the options

One could almost assume that the complicated calculation method served to protect the nerves of all potential retirees, because: Whoever sees in black and white that 60 payment points are required for a pension of EUR 2,000 must first swallow.

Since it is hardly possible to work for six decades in Germany, this means that after 45 years of work, your gross earnings must be about a third above the average - and that monthly.

In concrete terms: Based on the average German gross salary of 3,975 euros in 2021, the job would have to bring in around 5,287 euros per month in order to receive a gross pension of 2,000 euros.

For most citizens, this is simply not feasible.

To make matters worse, the relationship must be maintained at all times.

So if the average earnings of all insured persons increase, their own wages must also increase proportionally.

Here at the latest it becomes apparent that work alone is not enough in most cases.

So if you don't want to sit dry in old age, you have to "make private provision now," according to the German insurance company's appeal.

There are enough offers for old-age provision, but of course it is also crucial here how much money is available to the individual and what can be planned for a successful retirement.
