High investment requirements despite falling student numbers at secondary schools in the Weilheim-Schongau district

A lot has to be invested in the schools that belong to the district.

In view of the falling number of pupils in some cases, tough debates about individual school locations are to be expected.

District – The district of Weilheim-Schongau is spending 24.4 million euros this year on the schools it runs – junior high schools, grammar schools, vocational schools and the FOS/BOS.

The need for investment is still great, even if a lot has already been done in recent years.

It's no wonder that the district councils take a close look at the number of pupils before deciding to invest in a school.

During the budget deliberations, Friedrich Zeller (SPD/Schongau) noticed the development of the number of pupils at the secondary school in Peißenberg.

While there were still 535 students in 2017, there were only 449 in 2021. According to the statistics of the district finance department, the past year was not a one-off slip.

Fewer and fewer high school students in Peißenberg

Instead, a clear trend can be seen.

Every year since 2017, there have been fewer junior high school students in Peißenberg.

The Peißenberg middle school, which is located on the same campus, cannot compensate for the falling student numbers at the Realschule, although its student numbers are more or less stable.

In view of the fact that, according to district administrator Andrea Jochner-Weiß, the long-neglected secondary school in Peißenberg should enjoy “top priority” in future renovation plans, Zeller expressed doubts in the district and finance committee as to whether this would make any sense.

Specifically, it is planned to demolish the worn-out school containers that have been in use in Peißenberg for decades and to build a replacement building instead (we reported).

The costs required for this are estimated at a good six million euros.

Should Peißenberger secondary school students go to Schongau?

Zeller put up for debate whether one shouldn't fundamentally discuss the Realschule in Peißenberg.

"The students can also go to Schongau and attend the secondary school there," said the Schongauer.

This not only saves the costs for possible renovations, but also the annual maintenance costs at the same time.

If you take a closer look at the development of the number of students at the secondary school in Schongau, you can guess why Zeller dared to take this step.

Because there the declines are even more blatant than in Peißenberg.

In 2017, 928 students attended the Realschule in Schongau, in 2021 there were only 763, i.e. 165 fewer.

However, Zeller received a smooth rebuff from the district administrator: “I stand behind the Realschule Peißenberg.

The old container solution has to go,” said Andrea Jochner-Weiss.

At the other two secondary schools in the district - in Weilheim and in Penzberg - the decline in the number of pupils is less clear.

In Weilheim, the number of secondary school students fell from 626 in 2017 to 597 in 2021, in Penzberg from 576 to 514.

Grammar schools in the Weilheim-Schongau district are also reporting declining student numbers

The grammar schools in the district are also reporting declining student numbers.

In Weilheim, for example, 118 fewer students went to grammar school last year than in 2017. In Schongau, the number of students fell from 855 to 791, in Penzberg from 967 to 911. However, all three grammar schools will see a significant increase in student numbers in the coming years due to the reintroduction to be expected from G 9.

The number of pupils at the support centers has remained largely stable.

In Weilheim, a total of 183 children and young people attended the FÖZ in 2017, in 2020 there was an intermediate high of 192 pupils, and in 2021 it was 180. In Penzberg, the number of pupils at the support center fell slightly from 93 in 2017 to 81 last year.

The support center in Altenstadt shows continuous growth.

If 118 children were schooled there in 2017, there were already 134 in 2021, according to district statistics.

The number of students at the vocational school in Schongau has fallen sharply - within five years from 1245 to 1072 students in 2021. In Weilheim, however, the numbers are somewhat more stable: from 1672 in 2017 to 1616 in 2021. The level is roughly the same the number of pupils at the FOS/BOS, which was 562 last year, was 592 five years ago.
