Great hopes and ambitions carried by the young Amjad Ali after his return from Damascus, which he visited to participate in the third Syrian honey festival “organized recently by the Syria branch of the Arab Beekeepers Union” to start implementing it on the ground by launching an initiative to spread the culture of beekeeping among school students, which is the first experience of its kind at the level of Syria.

The introductory event hosted by the Martyr Munir Maarouf High School in the village of Al-Qanjara in the northern countryside of Lattakia Governorate, under the supervision of the Directorate of Education and in cooperation with the Syrian Beekeepers Association of the branch of the Agricultural Engineers Syndicate in the governorate and the Arab Beekeepers Union aims to introduce the profession of beekeeping and honey products according to those in charge of it.

About the initiative, the event organizer Ali told SANA reporter, “The aim of the initiative is to motivate young people to practice beekeeping from an early age, and to devote efforts through cooperation with various concerned parties to provide as much support as possible to start projects with economic returns that benefit their owners.”

He added that the event is the starting point for a series of activities within the initiative that target school students in the countryside, such as Zaghrain, Al-Basit and others, to reach the largest possible number of beneficiaries, pointing out that the selection of the targeted areas is carried out according to several criteria, including the natural richness that characterizes them, thus providing fertile pastures in the harvest seasons. Honey or those damaged by fires for the role of bees in helping them recover and restore their greenness, as well as afforestation.

Dr. Abdullah Hatoum, an expert in beekeeping for more than 40 years, expressed his hope that the event will be a promising start for a large project whose positives can be touched on humans, the environment and the economy, in addition to the psychological comfort that working with bees gives, the material benefit, and its contribution to restoring the ecological balance of the areas that have been hit by disasters. Environmental protection, improving agricultural production, providing job opportunities, and reviving several professions to secure equipment such as sewing and carpentry.

Secretary of the Syrian Beekeepers Association in Lattakia, Eng. Rayan Mualla explained that the effectiveness is in line with the association’s objectives to spread the culture of beekeeping among all segments as it is an easy and useful profession that requires little capital and modest effort and can start with three cells that can be increased with the development of experience, expressing the association’s readiness to provide the necessary knowledge For education in the correct scientific way and the establishment of free training courses for those wishing to learn.

Fawaz Hammad, director of secondary school, stressed the importance of the initiative to expand students' knowledge and inform them of new sources of income available in the surrounding environment that can be used to establish independent small projects in addition to studying, improving families' living conditions and encouraging them to stick to the land and agriculture, noting that the target group is between 13 and 18 years old.

The event included a detailed explanation of bees and their role in ecological balance, biodiversity, breeding methods, bee products, types of honey and production requirements, with the opportunity for students wishing to register for training courses.
