A 34-year-old and her two-year-old daughter got away with a huge shock when a block of ice hit a playground out of nowhere in Vaterstetten (Ebersberg district).

Vaterstetten

- "Thank God no one was injured" - with these words the press report of the Poing police begins about a near-accident on a playground in Vaterstetten (Ebersberg district).

There, a chunk of ice about 30 centimeters in diameter had fallen out of nowhere from the sky and shattered on the ground.

A two-year-old girl and her 34-year-old mother were nearby who observed the incident, officials said.

By the time the police arrived at the playground on Brunnenstrasse in the Baldham community, most of the chunk had already melted.

A small remainder could be secured by the officials.

Secured for the laboratory: One of the fragments of the ice chunk is now in the freezer of the Poing police to secure evidence.

The part had burst on impact - the strong spring sun quickly did the rest.

Near-accident on the playground in the district of Ebersberg: chunks of ice probably broke away from the plane

The Poinger police initially assumed that the chunk could have been toilet residue from an airplane and notified the relevant authorities for clarification.

After consultation with air traffic controllers and the southern Bavarian air traffic control office, it was found out that toilet residues are generally harmless.

"Bad Moment": Inhabited area hit

However, the chunk was more of a frozen lump of condensation water that broke away from the aircraft at an unfavorable moment, i.e. over an inhabited area.

A plane that crossed the Vaterstetten airspace at around 9.45 a.m. could not initially be identified with certainty.

A spokesman for the inspection told the editorial office that further information from air traffic control can be expected on Monday.

The matter will probably not have legal repercussions - nobody is to blame for ice formation on airplanes and isolated falling of individual pieces.

"Since it cannot be assumed that there were chemical residues or the like in the chunk, there is no danger of further use of the playground," writes the police.

Chunks of ice that fall from the sky and cause damage occur occasionally in the region, most recently in Warngau, where the chunk destroyed a photovoltaic system.
