(CNN Spanish) --
Thomas Ess, head of the mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), was expelled from Nicaragua through a letter he received from the government of Daniel Ortega.
The note informed him of the withdrawal of approval as a member of the international organization.
The letter took the ICRC by surprise and, they say, they do not know the reasons why the government of President Ortega made this decision.
Ess has already left Nicaragua, explained the ICRC spokeswoman, who, however, reiterated that -despite the decision adopted by the Nicaraguan government- "the ICRC reaffirms its commitment to continue its humanitarian work in Nicaragua, adhering to its principles of neutrality, impartiality and independence.
CNN has tried to contact the Nicaraguan government to find out the reason for the expulsion of Mr. Thomas Ess, but so far has not received a response.
