A propaganda video broadcast on North Korean state television is said to show how dictator Kim Jong Un arranged for the test launch of a new long-range missile on Thursday.

Behind the presentation, which is at least unusual from a Western point of view, is power politics.

The bitterly poor and internationally ostracized North Korea has a trump card: its nuclear weapons and missile program.

And the test falls into the phase of the Ukraine war and the associated threats from Russia with its nuclear arsenal to the West.

It is North Korea's first ICBM test since 2017. Apparently reason enough for Kim Jong Un to present himself to his people as a military hero in a leather jacket.
