The municipality of Forstern is preparing for refugees from the Ukraine.

But the area of flight and asylum is not the only one dealt with by the social contact person Mathias Weigl.

Forstern

– 46 people are currently living in the asylum accommodation in Forstern.

Three refugees from Ukraine have already been taken in, reported the social contact person Mathias Weigl in the municipal council.

In addition, he currently knows of two Forsterner families who have privately taken in people from the Ukraine.

Ukraine refugees

In that respect, things are still relatively calm.

Completely different than in Forstinning, where Weigl also works as a social contact - "They overrun us right now.

But we will monitor the situation here closely.” One property has already been reported to the district office for rent by refugees, and the owners were not interested in two others.

Mayor Rainer Streu (AWG) noted that the situation as a whole would be a major challenge for the community: "The children are entitled to school and kindergarten.

We have a child in a wheelchair, and thinking about our elementary school makes my stomach ache, and the kindergartens are packed.”

The language barrier is also a problem, but a native Russian has already helped with the interpreting, and a woman from Ukraine would also help.

"There is already a network that we need," said Weigl.

So you want to reactivate the asylum helper group as well.

He was heavily involved from 2015, but the volunteers had withdrawn two or three years ago - because of the pandemic, but also because the help was no longer necessary, Weigl explained: Many asylum seekers have been here for years and have settled in accordingly.

Asylum seekers

So in Forstern they have experience with refugees.

Since 2015/16, asylum seekers have been living in a private house and in the Am Steinfeld container facility – currently a total of 46 people, including 20 children.

"There are five families, two single parents and otherwise single women and men," explained Weigl.

Almost all girls and boys have a childcare or school place.

Weigl praised the good cooperation with the institutions and with the district, especially with the youth welfare office and asylum management, where you "always have an open ear".

The families come from Nigeria, Tanzania, Eritrea and Sierra Leone.

There is a relatively high fluctuation in the Am Steinfeld accommodation, individuals from Afghanistan, Jordan, Albania, Iraq, Ethiopia, and also from the Ukraine live here.

Three of them were housed there before the wave of refugees, three more have now been assigned.

"These are people in their mid-50s who also help each other a lot," reported Weigl.

Regarding the asylum status, he explained when asked by the committee that a single mother with two children and a woman with four children were recognized.

"You would be entitled to look for an apartment, but there is no chance." The rest are still in the process, some with toleration.

Seniors

Asylum is not the only area in which Weigl works.

He reported to the seniors that an attempt had been made to elect a new seniors' advisory board - as reported so far in vain.

"But we're still trying to get an advisory body back," he said.

homelessness

Recently there has not been an acute case of homelessness in Forstern.

But there are three families where this topic comes up again and again, partly because of a difficult financial situation.

In the fall, a person will return to Forstern who was already accommodated here - in the emergency shelter, which is intended as a purely temporary solution.

social

In the area of social affairs, Weigl highlighted the “Together for Foresters” project.

Last year, together with the neighborhood help and financial support from the readers' aid organization "Licht in die Herzen", some citizens were given a helping hand, for example with a subsidy for the orthodontist's bill or meal vouchers.

The family support center headed by Christina Schultes is an important contact point, but lives from face-to-face offers.

"For example, we wanted to set up a café for families with children, but then Corona came along.

That would certainly be an enrichment for the place.” For the young people, this also applies to the “ChillZone”.

The youth room learns from the experiences of the Forstinninger "Culture Club", which in turn benefits from the ideas from Forster.
