Very moved, the pope begged the Virgin Mary for peace between Ukraine and Russia

Francis “consecrated” Ukraine and Russia to the “Immaculate Heart of Mary,” according to a prayer uttered by popes only at the most serious times in history.

In front of a statue of Our Lady of Fatima installed in the heart of Saint Peter's Basilica, Friday evening March 25, feast of the Annunciation in the Church, Pope Francis, moved, very collected, regularly raising his eyes to this statue, “

consecrated

” Russia and Ukraine by pronouncing slowly, almost in a low voice, a long prayer to implore the end of this conflict and “

to obtain peace

”.

At the same time, Catholic bishops around the world and millions of the faithful were saying the same prayer.

Mother of God and our Mother, we solemnly entrust and consecrate to your Immaculate Heart ourselves, the Church and all of humanity, especially Russia and Ukraine.

Welcome this act that we are carrying out with confidence and love, put an end to war, assure the world of peace.

This key phrase concluded a long plea for peace before the Virgin “

who brings peace

” and who “

always guides to Jesus, Prince of peace

”.

This prayer, very rarely pronounced by the popes - only six times in a century and always on dramatic occasions - has its origin in the Marian apparitions of Fatima in Portugal, in 1917, recognized by the Church.

Nationalist interests

One of the

"visionaries

", Lucie, had transcribed this message which she would have received from the Virgin in the midst of the First World War: "

To prevent this war, I will come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart and for the reparative communion first Saturdays.

If my demands are accepted,

Russia will convert and we will have peace;

otherwise it will spread its errors throughout the world, provoking wars and persecutions against the Church”.

Special envoy to Fatima by the pope, the Polish cardinal Konrad Krajewski, pronounced at the same time, this Friday, the same prayer at Fatima, in front of the statue of the Virgin.

Introducing this prayer, Francis lamented that the world "

has forgotten

the lesson of the tragedies of the past century, the sacrifice of millions of dead in world wars

" and that, "

sick with greed, we have locked ourselves in nationalist interests

(…).”

He then begged God through the Virgin: “

In this dark hour, come to help and console us (…) We are certain that you do not despise our supplications and that you come to our aid, especially in times of trial. .

The pope then spoke of the “

urgent need for your maternal intervention

”, before stating a long litany to the Virgin: “

You, star of the sea, do not let us sink in the storm of war (…) Free- us from war, save the world from nuclear threat (…) Queen of peace, obtain peace for the world.

He then asked for protection for "

those who are suffering and fleeing under the weight of the bombs

" or "

who are forced to leave their homes and their country. "

»

Not a magic formula

Before this prayer, the pope had led a penitential ceremony, with confessions where he confessed himself, and a homily where he once again criticized: "

this odious war

" whose "

bombs are destroying the homes of many of our defenseless Ukrainian brothers and sisters

".

We feel a sense of helplessness and incapacity (…) our forces are not enough

, he observed.

We cannot solve the contradictions of history alone, nor even those of our hearts.

We need the wise and gentle strength of God, which is the Holy Spirit.

We need the Spirit of love, which destroys hatred, extinguishes resentment, greed, awakens us from indifference (…)

” Francis punctuated: “

Because, if we want the world to change, our hearts must first change.

To do this, today, let us let ourselves be taken by the hand of the Virgin

”.

He also explained once again the meaning of his gesture: "

In union with the bishops and the faithful of the whole world, I wish to bring solemnly to the Immaculate Heart of Mary all that we are living: to renew to her the consecration of the Church and of all humanity and consecrate to her, in a special way, the Ukrainian and Russian peoples, who venerate her as their Mother with filial affection.

But, he stressed, “

this is not a magic formula, but a spiritual act.

It is a gesture of full confidence of the children who, in the tribulation of this cruel and senseless war which threatens the world, have recourse to their Mother, throwing fear and pain into her Heart, entrusting themselves to her.
