Volunteers from the Tölz region have come a long way, bringing money, food and hygiene items to the Ukrainian border for refugees.

Bad Tölz –

Many people from the Tölz region have been touched by the incomprehensible suffering of the people in Ukraine and have become active.

With three vehicles and two trailers, six volunteers have now brought 5.5 tons of urgently needed relief supplies to Kocsord, more than 1000 kilometers away.

The village in the extreme east of Hungary is only 30 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.

For the time being, 75 refugee children and their mothers are accommodated in the community center, living and sleeping in a very small space without any privacy.

"The incredibly helpful local people provide them with the bare essentials," reports Birgit Siegl, one of the volunteers.

Further help is still absolutely necessary, because there is no government support.

The people from Tölz also drove to an orphanage and a school in Sarospatek and the border town of Zahony, from where a large part of the donations were taken to the Ukraine.

These were clothing, baby items, non-perishable food, baby food and hygiene items that were collected in the Montessori school in Tölz.

The group also brought monetary donations from relatives, friends, work colleagues and members of the rehabilitation sports club.

"With us, people could be sure that the donations would arrive directly and without detours," Siegl explains the great willingness to help.

Donations for orphanage

The Hungarian foundation “Borderless Children's Aid” launched the “Rolling Kids” aid project, actually to sensitize children to road safety.

But now it is mainly about giving refugee children a few moments of joie de vivre.

The local contact was Janosch Mester, who coordinated the help and invited the Tölz guests to a Hungarian dinner.

The gratitude of the people in need was overwhelming, report the passengers.

Mayor István Földi also welcomed them and thanked them for their support.

Passengers in the aid convoy were Birgit Siegl, Henning von Lepel, Wolfgang Strunck, Lukas Fuchs, Rebecca Rogers and Elias Eberl.

The Mittendorfer company from Waakirchen (Miesbach district) provided a Crafter free of charge, and the Auer company from Tölz provided a trailer.

In view of the joy and gratitude of the refugees, the group from the region would like to go to the Ukrainian border again during Easter.
