The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that it is working with all parties to calm the deteriorating situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, expressing its concern over the recent events there.
In a statement today, the ministry said: "We express our deep concern about the increasing tension in the Karabakh region," stressing that the facts of the armed breach of the Russian peacekeeping forces' area of responsibility and the violation of the ceasefire are inconsistent with the agreement signed by Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia in November 2020.
The Russian Foreign Ministry urged the two sides of the crisis to exercise restraint and strictly adhere to the existing tripartite agreements at the highest level through cooperation with the Russian peacekeeping forces, stressing that it is conducting all contacts to take the necessary measures to calm the situation in the region.
Earlier today, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that the Azerbaijani forces had entered the area of responsibility of the Russian peacekeeping battalion in the Karabakh region.
It is noteworthy that Armenia and Azerbaijan, under the auspices of Russia, reached on November 9, 2020, a ceasefire agreement that ended a conflict between Baku and Yerevan in the Nagorno-Karabakh region that lasted about a month and a half.
