14 immigrants trapped in the Rio Grande and bodies floating in its waters: the migratory drama on the border does not let up

Mexican immigration authorities rescued 14 Central American migrants near Piedras Negras. They also located the bodies of two men without identification. The flow across the border increased 7% between January and February.


The migratory drama on the southern border of the United States does not let up.

Between Tuesday and Saturday, 14 immigrants who were trapped in the Rio Grande trying to cross it were rescued by the Mexican authorities, who also recovered two bodies floating in the riverbed, whose identity has not been determined.

Four other people were intercepted while wandering on Federal Highway 2 between Nuevo Laredo and Piedras Negras: three of them were abandoned by

coyotes

, as well as a 17-year-old boy who was missing, according to a statement from the Mexican Immigration Institute ( IMN).

The deceased, two adult men, were found floating in the waters of the river.

The first body was recovered on Tuesday, between international bridges 1 and 2, in Piedras Negras.

The other was located on Saturday in a sector known as Santa Martha.

Both bodies lacked identification documents.

The bodies were lifted by officials from the Coahuila State Attorney General's Office and transferred to the Forensic Medical Service to carry out tests on the cause of death.

Between Tuesday, March 22 and Wednesday, March 23, the authorities located the 14 people trapped in the Rio Grande;

seven came from Honduras and the other seven from Nicaragua.

Among them were two minors.

The first group to be rescued, all Hondurans, had to be treated for hypothermia, the IMN reported.

The same Tuesday, around 2 pm local time, the authorities found the seven Nicaraguan immigrants hugging a pillar of the International Bridge I, between Piedras Negras and Eagle Pass, Texas.

On Wednesday, Mexican authorities located a Honduran immigrant trapped on the rocks, in the middle of the riverbed, between international bridges 1 and 2.

The migratory flow to the United States has grown in recent months.

Between January and February of this year, the number of immigration apprehensions increased 7%, according to federal data.

Between the two months, US border authorities intercepted 319,000 people trying to cross the border.
