- It's been several months since you've been heard in the public debate, for health reasons.

Following a minor operation, I contracted what is called a nosocomial illness: three infected vertebrae, a long stay in hospital, two very dangerous surgeries that could have left me paraplegic.

After nearly three months of pain and dread, I am coming out of hell and taking the opposite route to that of great old age: I am gradually reclaiming the basic gestures of daily life, I am walking with a walker, I also use walking sticks.

A physiotherapist, firm and gentle, remusculates my legs and patiently makes me a man like the others.

But I don't want to lapse into melodrama: my progress is rapid and, were it not for an irreducible heartache, I would have rediscovered the joy of living.
