The Ryanair chapter at Frankfurt Airport is over.
The last plane from the low-cost airline took off on Saturday (03/26/2022).
At least for now.
Frankfurt – Now it's over: With the flight FR382 to Dublin, the last plane of the low-cost airline Ryanair took off from Frankfurt Airport * on Saturday (March 26th, 2022).
The company announced in January that it would withdraw from Germany's largest airport.
Now it is time.
The five aircraft that were stationed until recently are to be redistributed to cheaper airports, such as Nuremberg.
Reason for the departure of Ryanair from Frankfurt: the money.
The announcement to cancel flights to and from Frankfurt followed in response to a fee increase at the airport.
"Rather than give Ryanair an incentive to stay and grow, Frankfurt has chosen to drive away traffic and jobs by increasing airport charges," the Irish company said.
The federal government accused Ryanair manager Jason McGuiness of having distorted competition with the billions in aid for Lufthansa.
Ryanair at Frankfurt Airport: Out after five years
Initially, the low-cost airline benefited from an incentive program by the operator Fraport with lower flight fees for new providers at the location.
The withdrawal of Ryanair could have consequences for Frankfurt Airport.
In particular, the new Pier G is explicitly tailored to the needs of direct flight providers such as Ryanair.* Now questions about capacity utilization are likely to arise.
Because of the Corona crisis *, however, an opening was only planned together with the entire Terminal 3 in 2026.
Fraport is hoping for more flight operations again after a longer period of time since the corona pandemic.
Return of Ryanair to Frankfurt Airport not excluded
As of now, Ryanair will no longer be present at Frankfurt Airport.
However, the company did not rule out a return in a few years: "We will certainly have very good talks to Pier G in the new Terminal 3 *," said the head of the Ryanair subsidiary Laudamotion and Germany spokesman, Andreas Gruber, a few weeks ago .
After all, the growth targets of the group and the airport operator Fraport matched well.
