Washington-Sana

The US authorities in Colorado issued yesterday orders to evacuate 19,400 people after wildfires broke out south of the university city of Boulder in the state.

The wind-fuelled bushfire started yesterday and has spread over an area of 49 hectares without being contained and burned a wilderness reserve near the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the Associated Press quoted Maria Washburn, a spokeswoman for Boulder firefighters, as saying.

For his part, Brian Oliver, chief of the Boulder fire department, said that a night shelter was opened after evacuation orders included 8000 homes and 7000 buildings without any damage to buildings, noting that officials expect that it will take several days to deal with the fire.

Last year's fire occurred near the site of the current fire and resulted in the destruction of more than a thousand homes.
