Passover is approaching and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is working to open the import of eggs from other countries - due to the shortage of eggs from Ukraine, which provides Israel with 30% of annual consumption and due to the truck drivers' strike in Spain.
Therefore, for fear that Israelis will not have eggs on a holiday in which egg consumption increases significantly, it has already been decided to approve the opening of egg imports from Bulgaria.
The ministry expects that as early as next week, millions of eggs will arrive that will meet the demand.
The ministry says they continue to be in constant contact with importers and are exploring the local market.
At the same time they are considering opening up egg imports from other countries, including India.
It should be noted that Poland, which was also marked as a relevant destination, has already been approved for the import of eggs for industry, and its suitability for importing eggs for domestic consumption is now being examined.
Another solution proposed is to import eggs from Greece and Turkey close to Israel - a move that was supposed to shorten the transport time.
Spain was supposed to be a destination for importing eggs to Israel at the expense of Ukraine, but the strike by truck drivers in the country following the rise in fuel prices disrupted plans.
In addition the Ministry of Health granted the request of the Ministry of Agriculture to extend the shelf life of the imported eggs so that they can start importing earlier.
