Inflation: This is no longer an abstract concept.

Each of us feels them at the supermarket checkout.

We see on the bill that the gut feeling "everything is getting more expensive" is actually correct.

Munich – Aldi recently turned the price screw.

At Germany's best-known discounter, the goods have become more expensive in rows.

The experts at the price transparency app smhaggle report that almost 500 products are affected.

Dramatic: Price increases at Aldi have a signal effect, other retail chains are following suit.

Own brands are also affected – so there is no cheaper alternative for consumers.

On this page we show what that means in concrete terms: average shelf prices of exemplary products that smhaggle determined (as of March 24).

Promotional prices or prices in individual markets may vary.

Senior Aid boss Lydia Staltner: This is how inflation hits seniors

Lichtblick Senior Aid boss Lydia Staltner explains in an interview how pensioners suffer from high prices.

Lydia Staltner (62) founded the LichtBlick association 19 years ago to help seniors in Munich and Upper Bavaria.

Since then, the association has grown steadily, as has the number of people in need, and poverty in old age is omnipresent.

The need that the helpers see will not be alleviated even by the announced pension increase, says Staltner.

In July, the pension will be increased by 5.35 percent - a reason to celebrate?

No, but the state can be happy: more than 500,000 more pensioners have had to pay tax on their pension since the last increase in 2020 alone.

With the current increase, there will be more again from July.

Pensioners have to pay taxes as soon as they have 769.50 euros net available per month - and that's crazy!

Who will benefit from the pension increase?

Anyone who has a pension of just under 2000 euros will also receive around a hundred euros more per month from the increase from July.

I am also happy for everyone whose pension is now being increased again.

But for seniors struggling with a small pension, the increase is of little consequence.

The average pension for women is 774 euros.

From July there will be 41.50 euros more for them.

However, inflation eats up this plus immediately.

Rent, electricity, public transport, groceries and toiletries - all of this is getting more and more expensive.

So you think the pension increase is a drop in the bucket?

She's not even a drop, more like window dressing.

Those whose pension is so low that they receive basic security do not even notice the 5.35 percent.

The increase is offset, but those affected only have 449 euros to live on.

Those who receive basic security get their rent paid by the state, are exempt from the broadcasting fee and receive food from the food banks.

Anyone who receives even two euros "too much" pension is not entitled to basic security.

How do you help?

As an emergency aid, we support people with supermarket vouchers, for example.

Last year we distributed those worth 292,000 euros.

I founded the association in 2003 when I observed a lady in the neighborhood wearing the same worn-out shoes every day, summer and winter.

For a long time now, however, people have no longer been just interested in new shoes or winter jackets.

Today they turn to us because their fridge is empty.

They prefer not to eat in order to be able to pay for the electricity.

Lichtblick has been around for 19 years.

Has the need worsened lately?

Yes.

And that's scary because we live in a rich country.

Recently, on the 20th of the month, a pensioner had only 1.50 euros in his wallet and neither money for food nor medicine.

In the fall we bought and distributed mountains of blankets.

Many seniors no longer dare to heat their homes.

They are terrified of horrendous back payments.

It's been extreme for the past eight weeks: Seniors have been calling desperately and asking for meal vouchers.

In Munich alone, up to ten new applications are received every day.

Economists continue to expect price increases for energy and food.

I get scared and anxious - also because I know that there are many poor seniors who are still hiding.

The shame and also the pride of the people is great.

Only one in three contacts the social welfare office.

If the pension increase for socially disadvantaged seniors does not help much - what should the state do?

Poverty in old age is often female.

Many women do not receive a basic pension because they have not worked for a full 33 years to raise children or care for relatives.

In the future, one would have to start here and also significantly increase the pension level overall.

Even those who work as nurses or salespeople today and earn little should still be able to look to the future with hope.
